This year we propose as a civil workshop to take a trip back in time to discover the world of textiles that were used to give color with raw materials that nature provides us as it was done in the Viking era.
We encourage you to experiment with colors, fabrics and natural materials in order to learn more about Viking clothing.
Karolina Ubartaite is a historical reenactor and artisan specializing in the reconstruction of historical textiles. Her work focuses on reviving and transmitting traditional crafts related to spinning, weaving, natural dyes, and sewing, always approached from a rigorous and well-documented perspective.
In addition, she is trained in illustration and is currently studying pedagogy, which allows her to combine art, research, and teaching in her projects. Thanks to this training, she develops not only handcrafted pieces but also visual and educational resources that help facilitate the understanding and dissemination of history.
Through historical reenactment, Karolina aims to bring everyday life of the past to life, showing how people dressed, worked, and expressed themselves in different eras. She firmly believes that history can be learned experientially—by touching, smelling, and feeling materials—and that textiles are an ideal bridge to connect with our cultural heritage.
She participates in workshops, reenactments, fairs, collaborations with museums, and educational projects, where she combines her experience as an artisan with her knowledge of illustration and pedagogy, always striving to make history more accessible and engaging for the public.
In this workshop, natural dyes will be made with different materials.
It starts with the explanation of the mordant until reaching the total dyeing of the fabric, the fabrics used are wool yarns and small pieces of 100% wool as a sample.
During the time that the fabric must be immersed in the dye, we take the opportunity to experiment and learn, practice and chat about lucet, brain loops and whipcording as well as tablet weaving and other looms and techniques.
